About this event

Welcome to Being a Treasurer: The Basics.

  • The Tuesday evening course takes place from 7.00pm to approximately 8.30pm on Tuesdays 15th, 22nd and 29th September. You only need to book once; your booking covers all three sessions.

ACAT has designed this course to equip new and experienced treasurers with core knowledge for their administrative role. Administration, including finance, is a key ministry in every church, a view supported by scripture in 1 Corinthians 12:28, which states:

“And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.” (ESV)

The role of a treasurer varies between churches and can cover a wide remit where the treasurer acts as a facilitator. This course is structured around five key areas:

  • Treasurer as Trustee – this section outlines the legal framework for charities and the duties of charity trustees, of whom the treasurer may be one.
  • Treasurer as Bookkeeper – this section addresses day-to-day management of church finances and accounting, exploring the systems a church may have in place for routine operations and the basic principles of charity accounting.
  • Treasurer as Planner – this section is primarily about budgeting but also addresses some concepts of risk management.
  • Treasurer as Tax Optimiser – this section covers what charities need to know to take advantage of Gift Aid and GASDS, as well as a few points about VAT
  • Treasurer as Compliance Officer – this section covers the requirements on charities for preparation of their year-end documents and external scrutiny.

Following the very successful course that the Diocese of York put on earlier in 2020, we planned to offer the same course in each deanery, but the COVID 19 pandemic has made this impossible. We are grateful that ACAT has adapted the course and now offering it via Zoom; we have negotiated 20 free spaces on each of three sets of dates.

The course has been split into three sessions, spread over three weeks, and each session will last approximately an hour and a half.
